20 WWE Women's Wrestlers You Totally Don't Remember

8. Bertha Faye

While WWE have developed an unfortunate (but deserved) reputation for treating its female talents solely as eye candy, and signing them for aesthetics alone, Bertha Faye was an early attempt at breaking the mold. Wrestling fans wanted to see great in-ring action, and with a wealth of experience in Puerto Rico and Japan, Faye was an accomplished wrestler who, theoretically, would bring an air of credibility to the women’s division.

Unfortunately, WWE made a complete mess of it. Faye played a comedic character who lived in a trailer park and dated Harvey Wippleman, and it was a complete shambles. She was subjected to countless obscene jokes on account of her size, and while she always performed with enthusiasm, it was hard to take Bertha Faye seriously, even as WWE Women’s Champion.

Women’s wrestling hit a downturn in WWE throughout 1995, and after being told to tone-down her power-based offence so as to not detract from the males, Faye became no more than pure comic relief. She was released from the company amid growing dissatisfaction with her role, and after spending 16 years performing as a prototype for female monsters like Aja Kong and Awesome Kong, Faye’s reputation was a shambles after leaving America.
