'Friends in high places' would eventually guide Brian James up the corporate ladder within WWE, but was at one point an all-too-literal assessment of his life as a wrestler.

His relationship with recreational drugs unfortunately trampled over a prosperous relationship with the company. Exiting in 2001 with personal demons cited in the terms of separation, James had struggled to find footing as a solo star following the first D-Generation-X breakup in 1999, and again the following summer after the makeshift Triple H goon squad parted ways.

His TNA run was at times embarrassingly linked to his past life, with his ‘3-Live-Kru’ entrance music containing ‘Oh You Didn’t Know’ in the entrance refrain, and a ‘VKM’ pairing with WWE refugee Billy Gunn designed as a brutally failed attempt to goad DX and Vince McMahon into paying attention TNA.

Just as he looked completely cut adrift, his old friend Triple H threw out a lifeline. Returning to the company in 2011, the born again christian Road Dogg won a place on the main roster in an unlikely in-ring return for the New Age Outlaws, before becoming a backstage dogsbody in a suit. Now head of creative and chief producer on SmackDown Live! he appears to be set for life pending any accidental misdemeanours.
