20 Years On From WWE In Your House: Canadian Stampede's Main Event: Where Are They Now?
1. Bret Hart
As hero of the hour and defender of a nation, 'The Hitman' predictably shone as the headline Hart in a celebration of the family's contribution to Calgary's community and Canada's legacy in professional wrestling.
The contest was a phenomenal use of his aura, building the crowd up to a fever pitch in the spine-chilling separate entrances and delivering an early payoff in his spirited brawl with Steve Austin, before phasing him back somewhat until a closing sequence that involved his brothers and father at ringside.
Scooping the WWE Title for a fifth time the following month, he'd not have a match during the reign that could remotely compete, and left the company a broken man following the Montreal Screwjob. Both his and the company's disinterest in his career by then destroyed what should have been a creatively and commercially profitable WCW tenure, particularly following Owen's death in 1999.
Exhibiting the real life guts his character so often had to display, Bret has recovered from a punishing array of setbacks since his forced retirement in 2000. Surviving cancer, the breakdown of two marriages, the passing of both his mother and father, a stroke, and most recently the death of his brother Smith on his own 60th birthday, 'The Excellence of Execution' remains astonishingly resilient, and an unlikely 2010 return to the WWE family has at least ensured his beloved legacy will be preserved and championed long into the future.
