16. The XFL Debacle

If you want an example of Vince's hubris gone awry, look no further than the XFL, an American football league set up by McMahon in 1999 in order to compete with the NFL's off-season. From the outset, it was met with skepticism, firstly that matches wouldn't be scripted, and even once it started, there was much hate for the broadcasting style and Jim Ross' lackluster commentary, not to mention absurd on-air appearances by McMahon (in character as "Mr. McMahon") and The Rock. The WWE lost $35 million on the XFL, and after being dropped by NBC due to low ratings and failing to secure another network deal, the XFL folded in May 2001. Because the mainstream media couldn't take a wrestling-backed sports enterprise seriously, the XFL remains one of Vince's more embarrassing failures, though the strangest thing is that he somehow didn't see it coming...
