At WrestleMania XXII, John Cena shocked the world by defeating Triple H to retain the WWE Championship. The following night on Raw, HHH made his intentions clear - he wasn't finished with Cena. To make matters worse, Edge - who had just defeated Mick Foley in a brutal match at 'Mania - also demanded a title shot. The result was a triple threat match at April's Backlash Pay-Per-View.

Edge tried to remove himself from the match at first, forcing Cena and HHH to destroy each other, but the two men caught "The Rated-R Superstar" and pulled him back into the action. Edge fought back, catapulting HHH into the turnbuckle and busting him open. Cena soon locked Edge in the STFU, but the bloody Triple H managed to break the hold. HHH fought off interference from Lita, then attacked Cena when the champ tried to take Edge out with an FU. HHH attempted a Pedigree, but Cena rolled him up with a jackknife pin and scored the three count, retaining his title.
