The Rock and Triple H wrestled each other dozens of times over the years, but no meeting was as important to both men's careers as their ladder match at SummerSlam 1998. For months, Triple H had tried to wrest the Intercontinental Title from The Rock's grasp, and their battle at Madison Square Garden would be his last chance.

The two unleashed their hatred upon one another, trying to inflict pain before even attempting to climb a ladder. Finally, The Rock tried to scale it, but Triple H knocked him off. The Rock fought back, using the ladder to injure the challenger's knee, but every time he tried to climb, Triple H would pull him down.

They fought to the outside, where The Rock catapulted HHH into the ladder, then to the aisle, where Triple H attempted a Pedigree, but Rock backdropped him onto it. Back in the ring, HHH hit The Rock with a chair, but The Rock came back with a People's Elbow on the ladder and a Rock Bottom.

The Rock tried to climb the ladder once more, but Triple H pulled him down and hit the Pedigree. Both men slowly stirred and climbed the ladder, but a low blow from Chyna knocked The Rock back to the mat, and HHH grabbed the title and the win.

After this match, there was no denying that both men were future world champions.
