25 Things You Didn't Know About John Cena
7. The Undertaker Thought He Was Ribbing At ‘Mania 34
The Undertaker's name carries immense respect in WWE circles. He was a locker room leader for decades, and it was smart for young stars to try everything they could to earn a nod from 'The Deadman' backstage. If he accepted them, then they were golden. If not, then others would follow suit and there could be trouble. In other words, practically everyone tried to get on 'Taker's good side.
Something was different about Undertaker heading into WrestleMania 34 though. He was desperate to put on a good match after stinking up the place vs. Roman Reigns the previous year at 'Mania 33, so he trained hard to get in great shape and was looking forward to putting on a 30-45 minute war with John Cena.
Or not.
The legend only found out that his match with Cena would last less than 3 minutes when he arrived at the building for the show. At first, he thought Vince McMahon was having him on, but John also pointed out that he'd buried 'Taker during pre-match promos. So, to him, it had to be a squash and he had to be the one staring at the bright lights high above.
Undertaker thought both were ribbing him. Surely they hadn't built up a Cena vs. 'Taker match for WrestleMania just to give the thing 3 minutes bell to bell during a 10 minute segment (including entrances)?! He was wrong, WWE had. Privately, The Undertaker was crushed when he found out that John didn't want to tear the house with him. He thought for sure they'd have one of the greatest WWE matches ever that night.
