Title Lost: WWE World Championship.

Lost Title To: Seth Rollins.

In the wonderful world of WWE, sometimes a champion just can’t possibly use his automatic title rematch because the laws of title bouts won’t allow it.

While the rematch is so rote that it’s largely regarded as automatic, there are occasions on which it somehow gets bypassed. In this case, the Money in the Bank briefcase stepped in and prevented such an occasion.

Moments after Seth Rollins defeated Roman Reigns for the WWE World Championship at the 2016 Money in the Bank PPV, their former Shield brethren Dean Ambrose cashed in his MITB briefcase and subsequently won the title from Rollins, thus moving the title on to another wrestler. It didn’t help Reigns’ cause that he was in reality suspended for failing a wellness test.

He did get a rematch of sorts, in a triple threat at Battleground against Rollins and Ambrose, but he never got a one-on-one rematch for his title.
