3 Ups & 4 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Sept 19)

3. Overcrowding In The Women’s Division

The revolving door in SmackDown’s women’s division was back again last night.

Recent weeks suggested that the brand had finally moved on from the dull, identikit multi-person feuds that had plagued the group since WrestleMania, but alas. They’re back, and while Charlotte Flair emerged from this show as a number one contender, then chances of her and Natalya having a one-on-one feud are slim, given Carmella and her briefcase.

It started with Charlotte addressing the audience in an in-ring segment, thanking the fans for their supporting during her father Ric’s recent health struggles. Natalya then interrupted, followed by Becky Lynch, then Lana and Tamina… and yeah, you know the drill by now.

The group were then put in a number one contender’s match, and while technically solid, the bout offered nothing to differentiate it from any other multi-person clash in WWE. You won’t remember it in a week’s time, and its outcome will have no impact on anyone but the winner.

Such booking gets everyone on television, but no one has any hope of ever getting over when sharing the screen with so many others at the same time, and the technique presents WWE creative at their absolutely laziest. Let’s hope it isn’t here to stay.
