3 Ups & 5 Downs From WWE SmackDown (9 Oct - Results & Review)

2. No Danhausen Silliness = Bonus!

After weeks of perpetual whinging about Gunther interacting with Danhausen, it's actually lovely to plonk their business in the 'Ups' section and know it's the right thing to do. On SmackDown, Gunther kicked the spookiness out of Danhausen in a match that never officially started. Then, Finn Bálor rushed out and ran the ‘Ring General’ off before Gunther sneakily returned and hit a powerbomb to Bálor on the announce desk.

There was some tremendous intensity from Gunther and Finn in particular. Dan played his part without anything comedic, which was unexpected - he was only there to take a pasting, and he did. Fair enough. Now, never have those characters interact again! Surely this was the end goal of Danhausen irritating Gunther in backstage skits over the piece. We definitely, definitely, definitely don't need the little goblin cursing a former World Champion and forcing him to relive the worst version of himself.

Can Gunther do comedy? Maybe, but does anyone really need to find out? The closest he should come to seeking laughs is telling Bret Hart that Bill Goldberg is his favourite pro wrestler. Gimmicks like Danhausen don't have a place in the more serious, grounded and realistic world of wrestling this 'Ring General' inhabits.

Besides, it's Bálor who has the necessary motivation to go after Gunther coming out of this show. He was humbled by the power of the Austrian, so he'd naturally want the one-on-one match that wee Danny boy was supposed to get on Friday. Cue Gunther vs. Finn tearing the house down on the upper midcard.

Sounds like a treat.
