3 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE Sunday Night's Main Event
Overbooked, inconclusive finishes drag show down, but there still is potential for new directions.
On paper, Sunday Night’s Main Event had some potential for a memorable show that actually charted new directions for some major characters. And in some ways, that’s exactly what happened.
However, WWE also managed to bungle some of that with melodramatic, overbooked finishes that kicked the can on some definitive results. In particular, the company spent weeks hyping a clash of two potential faces of WWE’s future, giving it all the bells and whistles heading into Sunday. And then they booked a shmozz ending that resolved nothing and simply threw more obstacles in front of a guy fans are desperate to see in the top spot. That could end up being a fine decision, but how often can you promise that fans will see fireworks and then offer them a rain check?
SNME had its moments, but the long commercials between matches ground things to a halt, while the melodramatic ending to the main event between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton only served to once again make the American Nightmare look like a geek in some ways. It’s really scary to see that creeping back into how babyfaces are characterized – it was a Vince McMahon staple that never worked out well.
