20. Billy Gunn Was An…Odd Pick!

OK, so everyone understands that Vince McMahon fancied creating new stars and using King Of The Ring to do it, but Billy Gunn was a career tag wrestler who was best-suited to doubles action over singles. He was certainly over as ‘Mr. Ass’, but backing him at KOTR ’99 was a step too far.

Gunn couldn't handle the heat or break out the way management wanted him to.

He definitely wasn't the next coming of prior winners like Bret Hart, Steve Austin or Triple H. Better than Mabel? No doubt, but that's hardly a huge compliment. Gunn was on par with '98's Ken Shamrock pick as an experimental risk that didn't pay off.
