On the surface, the ending of the opening match protected Owens. He turned tail and ran instead of eating an inevitable pinfall at the hands of Roman, surely a preferable option, and one befitting his 'intelligent heel' gimmick. On the other hand, it could be seen as the clearest example of Kevin's decline yet. Owens roared onto the main roster, taking on Cena head-on and defeating him in his debut. He then lost two successive PPV matches against the US Champion, demonstrating no fear of defeat. Now that Owens is a champion, it seems as though he's contracted the same disease that somehow finds all heel champs: extreme cowardice.
