35 Years Of WWE WrestleMania Mistakes

31. WrestleMania V - Trump Plaza Revisited

Wikipedia

Though Clash of the Champions was a major factor in WrestleMania IV's disappointing buys, the show itself wasn't up to much. An already tepid card devoid of any big-drawing marquee matches was further hindered by the decision to host the event at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall - announced as 'Trump Plaza' thanks to the sponsorship of Donald Trump's adjacent hotel and casino complex.

Unlike the Silverdome, 'Trump Plaza' was a small venue containing 15,000 seats, which, combined with the building's poor acoustics, gave the show a small-time feel. With an audience largely comprised of curious casino-goers rather than wrestling fans, the show suffered from a flat atmosphere throughout.

However, Trump's sponsorship was extremely fruitful for the WWF, to the extent that they chose to host WrestleMania V once more at the Boardwalk Hall. All the same problems as the year previous blighted the show, as the company put on its weakest 'Mania to date.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
