35 Years Of WWE WrestleMania Mistakes

27. WrestleMania IX - Jim Ross In A Toga

WWE Network

One could make an argument for 'everything' being the mistake that WWE made with WrestleMania IX, and they'd be correct. From the kitsch Roman themed setting (in a Las Vegas car park), the dreadful misuse of talent up and down the card, to Hulk Hogan's impromptu title win which buried Bret Hart in the process, WrestleMania IX was a disaster from top to bottom.

Jim Ross must have wondered what he'd gotten himself into when he turned up for his big WWF debut at Caesars Palace. One of the most respected play-by-play commentators in the business, a broadcaster in the mould of the venerated Gordon Solie, Ross was immediately bedecked in a toga and forced to call the abomination of Giant González vs. The Undertaker.

At least he got to keep his own name, unlike Finkus Maximus.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
