35 Years Of WWE WrestleMania Mistakes

23. WrestleMania 13 - Shawn Michaels On Commentary

WWE Network

Apart from the groundbreaking match between Steve Austin and Bret Hart, WrestleMania 13 was something of a mess. Rather than having the gravitas and prestige of the biggest event of the year, WWF's marquee event felt like just another show.

The opening four-way tag elimination match existed purely to set up an angle for free television. The undercard was entirely devoid of purpose or interest. And thanks to Shawn Michaels 'losing his smile' (i.e. he didn't want to job to Bret Hart), the show was blighted with a carbuncle of a main event in the form of The Undertaker vs. Sid.

The match was already destined to be terrible, but putting sit-out Shawn in the commentary booth made it even worse. As well as reminding bored fans what they were missing, HBK attempted to bury Bret Hart whilst making himself seem a goof in the process. Michaels' presence was an unnecessary yet somewhat apt addition to an already poor finale.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
