35 Years Of WWE WrestleMania Mistakes

16. WrestleMania XX - Goldberg Vs. Brock Lesnar

WWE

When Goldberg became the last star of the defunct WCW to jump to WWE, the prospect of him squaring off against the hottest new property in town, Brock Lesnar, had the fans bouncing. Unfortunately, they got the dead rubber to end all dead rubbers.

By the time the match came around, things had turned sour for both combatants. Goldberg and WWE were fed up with one another, and their relationship was set to end after the show. Meanwhile, 'the Next Big Thing' had grown increasingly tired of the wrestler's lifestyle, and after being repeatedly refused time off to be with his family, decided to call it quits - effective post 'Mania.

News inevitably slipped out, and soon it was common knowledge amongst all wrestling fans that the pair were departing. Smart fans at Madison Square Garden hijacked the contest, with chants of "boring" and "this match sucks" raucously ringing out around the arena. The whole sorry affair was an embarrassment for WWE, and in hindsight should have been booked to accommodate the circumstances. As far as farewell matches go, Malenko-Guerrero this wasn't. 14 years later, the pair were able to right all the wrongs with a blitzing sprint at WrestleMania 33.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
