35 Years Of WWE WrestleMania Mistakes

34. WrestleMania 2 - The Boxing Match

WWE Network

WrestleMania 2 was something of an unusual show. In order to top the hugely successful first event, Vince needed a novel gimmick to excite fresh interest. Splitting the show between three venues, each with its own main attraction, was his great innovation. It paid dividends, as the event was able to generate three-times the gate receipt.

Though the decision to place top heel 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper opposite Mr. T in one of the three big spots had obvious merit, doing so in a boxing match was arguably less wise. Though both men were flanked by professional boxers (in Mr. T's case, former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier), and Piper had previous experience in the sport, neither possessed the instincts or ability to put on anything other than a complete stinker of a bout.

We can at least be grateful Mr. T's all-round in-ring ineptitude didn't manifest itself in an industry exposing one-on-one wrestling match.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
