4 Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (May 9)
2. Ziggler & Nakamura Redeem Themselves
Dolph Ziggler and Shinsuke Nakamura engaged in SmackDown's worst segment last week. While their in-ring confrontation started relatively strongly, it soon descended into a stream of bad Michael Jackson jokes as Dolph un-ironically laid Nakamura's electric charisma (an attribute 'The Show-Off' is sorely lacking at the moment). It was a total dud that did nothing to build excitement for the feud, so when WWE announced another confrontation between the two last night, expectations weren't exactly high.
Fortunately, this week's material was a lot stronger. MJ's name wasn't mentioned once, and while Ziggler's act is definitely wearing thin, he at least came-off as entitled and obnoxious. Nakamura emerged keen to put an end to their rivalry, and challenged Dolph to a fight there and then. Ziggler declined, but the match was booked for Backlash instead.
WWE have done the right thing in holding-off on Nakamura's in-ring debut, because while the feud's content hasn't always built anticipation, the fact that Backlash will be 'The King Of Strong Style's' first match makes it feel more exciting than it probably is. With any luck, it'll result in a conclusive victory, and Nakamura leaving bitter old Ziggler in the dust.
