5. Dean Ambrose

SmackDown’s writers have done a great job of building the rivalry between the brand’s three top guys over the past couple of months. AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, and John Cena have had their share of individual issues this year, but recent weeks have seen both challengers firmly locked onto Styles’ WWE World Championship, and it came to a head last night.

Each man has benefited from having a clearly defined role in the rivalry: Cena is the good guy, Styles is the bad guy, and Ambrose operates in the shades of grey between both. Their contrasting personalities have made for a bitter, competitive feud with each wrestler taking it in turn to one-up the other two, and it’ll likely continue on and off for the duration of their SD careers.

Though his endgame goal was recapturing the title he lost to Styles at Backlash, Ambrose’s anger has been focused firmly on Cena in recent weeks. He’s been vociferous in his criticism of Cena’s part-time schedule and “lazy” lifestyle, and last night, he was out to not only take the gold, but hammer the final nail in John’s coffin.

He fell completely short. Cena was pinned by AJ Styles, and Ambrose was completely neutered. Downed by an Avalanche Attitude Adjustment, Dean was left helpless as a couple of AJ Styles chair shots finished off John Cena, and left the Lunatic Fringe’s latest title shot dead and buried. The late match double submission will likely buy him another shot, but Ambrose has now lost three WWE World Title matches in a row.
