5 Great Inaugural WWE Champions (And 5 That Sucked)

4. Chris Benoit And Kurt Angle - WWE Tag Team Champions

When World Tag Team Champions The Un-Americans were poached by Raw in the early days of the original brand split, SmackDown's tag teams were left without anything to fight over. GM Stephanie McMahon soon created the brand-new WWE Tag Team Titles, and announced an eight-team tournament to crown the first champions.

Los Guerreros were a natural fit for the tourney, as were former World Tag Team Champions Billy and Chuck. Good friends Edge and Rey Mysterio formed a team, as did bland babyfaces Billy Kidman and John Cena. Stephanie threw a curve ball into the mix, though, forcing hated enemies Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit to join forces in the hunt for the belts.

Angle and Benoit didn't become friends during their brief alliance, but their thirst for gold took them all the way to the titles. The two former and future world champions won the tournament and the belts, and while their reign wasn't long, they set a precedent for top competition and great in-ring action that lasts in the division to this day.
