5 Incredible Moments That Made The WWE

2. Vince Buys WCW

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMJfA0sCUp4 The biggest threat to Vince€™s empire undoubtedly came in the form of the Ted Turner owned WCW. For years the WWE were locked in a vicious weekly battle with WCW for wrestling supremacy as WWE€™S Raw, and WCW€™S Nitro, went head to head in what was known as the €˜Monday Night Wars€™. Whilst the WWE had always been traditionally the more dominant force, in 1996 the wrestling world was turned completely on its head when WCW did the unthinkable and turned the legendary Hulk Hogan heel. Hogan€™s defection and in turn the rise of the €˜nWo€™ signalled a shift in power; for the first time WCW was on top and it was they with the financial clout and star power who now looked the dominant force. In the long run however, it was a lead that WCW failed to hold and by the new millennium they had all but cooked their goose. In 2001 Time Warner (who had bought out Turner€™s empire) pulled the plug and put WCW up for sale. Vince McMahon saw his opportunity and pounced, buying his most bitter of rivals for a mere, reported £3 million dollars. On an iconic and infamous night in March 2001, Vince McMahon appeared on both Raw and Nitro simultaneously declaring that the fate of WCW was now in his hands. A night which saw WCW wrestlers fired (for real!) live on air, culminated with the quite frankly bizarre image of Shane McMahon appearing live in a WCW ring. In the months to follow the WWE used the purchase as an angle for a storyline, but for all intents and purposes, Vince had finally cut the throat of his rival and won the war.
