5 Most Insane Things Happening In Wrestling Right Now (Feb 8)

1. Kenny Omega Is ALL ELITE

You might not deem this that insane a development, especially when one takes the only realistic route—cynicism—to picture what would have became of the Cleaner, had he actually taken WWE’s Saudi super-powered mega offer.

They might have paid him an absolute fortune under the initial promise of programmes with Daniel Bryan, AJ Styles, and Seth Rollins, which, given the length of most typical WWE programmes, would have kept him busy for two calendar years.

But beyond that?

Once the novelty wore off, and Omega’s aura had been diminished by Michael Hayes telling him how to lay out his matches, and Baron Corbin had sprayed him in the eyes with deep freeze to set up their fourth consecutive pay-per-view match at Battleground 2022, Omega might have entered AJ Styles territory deep into his contract, too: a Phenomenal performer rendered much too normal through constant repetition and broader direction.

This isn’t happening, for on Thursday night, the best pro wrestler in the world preferred to join a start-up venture than take the biggest money deal offered in years. This really is nuts. You only have to trace you mind back a decade, if that, for a gorgeous illustration of change.

This is game-changing stuff; less than 10 years ago, WWE lowered the casket lid over Daniel Bryan’s face, and the company, in many ways, has paid for it ever since. If this is how what they thought of the consensus best all-round talent on the planet, how would they book every f*cker else?

At the apex of critical acclaim, on NXT—but not for true, headliner money. In WWE, it’s one or the other.

In AEW, it’s Double or Nothing—and why not take the risk, when the safe option is a Jinder Mahal chinlock?
