5 Most Insane Things Happening In Wrestling Right Now (Oct 26)
1. A Happy Ending
"A Champion transcends any company."
That was the tweet sent in support of Roman Reigns from the official New Japan Pro Wrestling Twitter account. It was one of several magnanimous gestures made by the wider professional wrestling community in response to Monday's horrible news story, which, collectively, proved that the best version of the industry is a genuine brotherhood.
Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega shared this sentiment individually, following WWE performers of all character alignments. Even Tama Tonga, a guy who invariably and enthusiastically presents himself as a d*ckhead on Twitter, one committed enough to the act to p*ss off his employers, reached out. On that note, NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa, so committed to his heel persona that he made fun of the Undertaker on Twitter, sent out a cryptic tweet in support of both Roman and his Shield brothers. Aleister Black, hardly a self-publicist, shared a touching story of Roman's locker room leadership. We bemoan the loss of so much in modern wrestling - good commentary, promos, managers - but WWE's face of the company is above the old petty back-stabbing and defensive, career-sabotaging bullsh*t. That's heartwarming to read.
Virtually every pro wrestler used their platform to get behind Roman's battle - even Enzo Amore, who incidentally also used his Twitter account to describe a 14 year-old victim of paedophilia as a "legend" - and, especially in light of recent events, this was a much-needed reminder that pro wrestling isn't an absolute hellscape.
