Something very unusual happened on Monday Night RAW: the crowd booed something they were supposed to not like, as opposed to Roman Reigns.

Elias and Kevin Owens sat down to perform a duet in Seattle, but before they could treat the audience to their dulcet tones, the Drifter made a crack about Seattle not having a basketball team. The crowd, evidently, were still very p*ssed off about the 2008 furore. They entered a sustained chorus of booing for six consecutive minutes in a genuine spectacle almost unprecedented—not in its decibel level but its sheer duration. This thing went longer than Triple H and Shawn Michaels at Bad Blood 2004.

It was cheap heat, sure, but what was most impressive was the way in which the two heels fed off the reaction. Elias’ eyes narrowed with a devious glee. Kevin Owens, a godd*mn pro, raised his voice to make himself heard over the din. They milked and maximised the reaction with the efficiency of intensive farming in a instantly iconic segment that proved, if nothing else, that Elias is more than a one-note comedy gimmick, and there remains huge potential within the Kevin Owens act.

Until he does the job to Cena tomorrow in a grim subverted echo of his 2015 launch programme, anyway.
