5 Pre-WWE CM Punk Controversies You Need To Know About
5. Trouble With The Family
Perhaps it is no surprise that controversy followed Punk in his WWE career, considering the issues he had with certain members of his family long before making it to the big time. Punk's family life is chequered and he continues to be estranged from them to this day. Like many wrestlers of his generation, Punk started out in the backyard putting on DIY shows for the Lunatic Wrestling Federation with his untrained friends and his brother Mike. As seen on Punk's WWE DVD bio 'CM Punk: Best In The World' the LWF started taking off, moving from the backyard to doing spot shows in front of crowds of over one thousand people. As this was happening, Punk noticed that the money wasn't adding up and that his brother had actually been embezzling thousands of dollars from the company. Punk hasn't spoken to him since. He had even more trouble with his Mother, eventually filing a restraining order against her in 2013. This came after Punk's Mom (who Punk says is bipolar) kept making financial demands of her son after he had given her $100,000 to help her out. When Punk wouldn't give her more, she escalated her threatening and abusive behaviour. Since cutting her off, Punk's mother has threatened to release embarrassing information about Punk's past (relating to high school arrests, apparently) and even inferred that she will commit suicide. When you factor in this type of family trouble on top of Punk's professional concerns and injury woes, you really begin to see why he would leave the WWE earlier this year.
