5 Previous WWE Buried Alive Matches - Ranked Worst To Best

The Buried Alive match is something that WWE started doing back in 1996. It's a match designed for The Undertaker because as an Undertaker we're supposed to think he buries people. Since pro wrestling is silly, we also have to think that he's willing to bury people alive in the context of a wrestling match. It's hard to know if fans think these matches are popular because they really haven't done a lot of them. There are just five of them that have been televised with four taking place on PPVs most recently in 2010 and one on Smackdown in 1999. The idea behind the match is that you have to beat up your opponent so bad that you literally knock the guy out to the point that you can dump him in a pit of dirt set up by the entrance. In most of these matches, there was blatant interference before the show. By announcing a match like this, it's WWE's way of telling us that there's very little chance that it will be a clean finish because in the history of this match it's only happened one time. It's expected that the Daniel Bryan vs. Kane match at WWE Payback on June 1 will be a Buried Alive match. It doesn't seem like the gimmick fits them, but they're doing it anyway. It would be the first time where a Buried Alive match took place where the Undertaker wasn't involved in any way.
