5 Reasons I Chose To Watch WWE SummerSlam 91 Instead Of TNA Slammiversary 2016

Possibly a trivial point, but one of the biggest issues with TNA's on-air product as of today is the announce team. In fact, it has been an issue with TNA all the way back to their earlier days. Mike Tenay also provided something of an anchor for the show's commentating, and there was always a feeling that he was having to cover up the deficiencies of Don West or Taz's lack of enthusiasm.

TNA's current announce team consists of Josh Matthews and D'Angelo Dinero. The Pope doesn't do a bad job, but Matthews has seemingly regressed since leaving WWE. I could be wrong, but I find his style somewhat grating and forced, which is somewhat in-line with the TNA product as a whole.

SummerSlam 1991 saw a three-man team at the booth, and whilst 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper is pretty passable throughout the show is carried by the classic duo of Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan and Gorilla Monsoon. Heenan is one of the greatest of all-time, and SummerSlam 1991 shows The Weasel at his very best.

Whether it is telling Piper that he heard his parents ran away from home or displaying worry and exasperation during the Bret/Perfect match, Bobby Heenan truly was a master at work. He managed to enhance whatever rubbish he announcing too, as seen by some of WCW's more forgettable moments in the mid to late 90s.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
