5 Things That Need To Change For A True Divas Revolution

4. Drop The Term 'Diva'

Whilst I'm on the subject of naming, one of the biggest issues with female wrestling in WWE and how it is portrayed comes down to a very simple issue; the word 'diva'.

The word means a female that is 'temperamental and haughty', someone who is high maintenance and likely to throw an irrational fit at any point. Basically how misogynists and stupid people view all women.

The word may have noble origins, where the basic sense was for it to mean 'goddess', but the meaning has been twisted and turned since its inception in the 19th century to what we understand it to mean today, a woman who has a reputation for being temperamental.

This immediately sets the female performers in WWE at a disadvantage in terms of presentation. Before any characters have been established, we are led to believe that they are 'Divas' by default. I understand that this is entertainment, but it also happens to be 2015.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
