5 Ups & 2 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Aug 1)

4. The Fashion Files Veer Into David Lynch Territory

Leave it to WWE to cash-in on a television show several weeks after its hype has dissipated, but last night’s Fashion Files took a heavy Twin Peaks influence. With wacky camera filters, spooky music, and bizarre imagery (Konnor pouring maple syrup on a log? Okaaaayyyy...), it saw Tyler Breeze attempt to solve the mystery of Fandango’s kidnapping, and was, as usual, one of the most entertaining things on the show.

It was built around a dream sequence that saw Breeze muse over his partner’s disappearance, but pointing out his own futility (“why didn’t I just call him instead of record this?”) as he did so. A seemingly entranced Fandango eventually showed up with The Ascension, and the metaphors drove Tyler around the bend, compelling him to awaken from the dream. Breeze was struck by a revelation as he woke, claiming that he now knew who’d kidnapped ‘Dango, and the scene closed.

The whodunit side of this story is getting a little tiresome, but Breezango and The Ascension (who are currently showing more personality than at any other point in their WWE careers) can’t be faulted for their performances. Another week, another fun contribution from the tag division’s lower reaches.
