Chelsea Green captured her first singles title in WWE Saturday night, defeating Michin for the Women’s United States Championship.

As a match, the finals of the Women’s US title was uneven, with some missed spots and clunky moments, but it held together well enough and had a great result. With Saturday Night’s Main Event emanating from Long Island, Green paid tribute to her husband Matt Cardona with her gear and nailing a Rough Ryder during the match. The finish, which saw Chelsea flip over Michin into an Unpretty-Her, was well executed.

Chelsea has done incredible character work since joining the main roster, managing to turn a one-note joke character into an enjoyable part of whatever program she’s on. She’s managed to be a funny heel without devolving into someone who can’t get it done in the ring. Too often, comedy characters become poor wrestlers, either because they actually can’t wrestle or because it would “betray” the character.

Green has blended her comedy with an ability to still “go” when the bell rings – even if she sometimes surprises herself with what she pulls off during her matches (another delight). Here’s hoping she gets to showcase her talents a bit more as the new Women’s US champ.
