5 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Dynamite (20 April)

1. Coffin Match Falls Short Of Expectations

Not to give Andrade El Idolo and Darby Allin excuses, but perhaps the duo were marred by time constraints on Dynamite. The speed with which Excalibur raced through the customary late-show match announcements prior to the main event suggested a tight schedule. Then, the coffin match felt shortcutted and insubstantial, concluding as if big chunks of action had been skipped out.

Whatever the case, this had its fun moments. Sting pulling off a Sting mask is always a riot, as is the WCW icon leaping off high places onto bodies below. Andrade's counter of a Coffin Drop into a German suplex on the outside felt like death. Covering the coffin lid with thumbtacks added an extra dimension, too, making the struggle against being shut inside it even more agonising.

But Andrade and Allin merely flirted with tapping into their usually excellent in-ring chemistry. Where previous encounters between these two have boiled over with intense physicality, this match merely simmered. By the end, Allin jumping atop the coffin to secure his rival inside it felt undercooked.
