5 Ups And 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Mar 21)
4. Finally, A Great Tag Match
The tag team division has been largely neglected on SmackDown in recent months. Champions American Alpha have next to no crowd reaction, and regularly miss weeks of television at a time. They wrestled The Usos in a non-title main event last week, but the match was held up by Styles/McMahon shenanigans, and the announcers barely spent a minute trying to put the teams over.
This match was a much-needed change of pace, however. The Usos were granted the title shot warranted by last week's victory, and both teams excelled. The first match of the night, Usos vs. Alpha was fun, fast-paced, and built to some highly dramatic near-falls during the closing stretch. In the end, Jason Jordan fell victory to a referee distraction, and succumbed to a Jey Uso Superkick and the inevitable three-count.
The crowd popped loudly for the title change, proving that matches like this are exactly what SD's writers need to do to rebuild the tag division. There's a long way to go, of course, but this was an excellent first step, and must be followed-up immediately, preferably with another exciting tag bout at WrestleMania 33 next weekend.
