DOWNS…

6. What’s Next For New Day?

This writer is a big fan of New Day, and the trio (currently a duo) are merchandise mavens. They easily are one of the biggest – if not the biggest – and most successful tag teams of the past decade.

But at the same time, watching their sixth SmackDown Tag Team Championship reign come to an end Sunday night, it still makes you wonder: At what point will they transition to something else? Whether it’s a Big E singles run or even just a switch back over to Raw, you can’t help but feel like the act is becoming a bit stale on the blue brand. They’re almost the permanent fallback option to hold tag team gold.

Consider that during the past three years on SmackDown, they’ve held the tag titles six times, clocking 377 days, which is more than one-third of the time. If you take into account their time on Raw, they’ve held tag team gold for more than 45% of the time the past five years.

That by itself is not the “down” here. The negative mark is that that is all there seems to be. Kofi Kingston had a six-month run with the WWE Championship, and a month after losing the title, he transitioned right back to being a tag champ again.

It would be nice to see something new for New Day, some new evolution of this long-running, very successful stable, rather than just counting on every few months they’ll end up with their brand’s tag titles.
