5 Ups And 7 Downs From WWE Raw (May 4)
1. WrestleMania Rematch With No Build-Up
Edge’s return to active competition was the biggest shock of the year to date, with his Royal Rumble appearance being one of the best moments in an otherwise dreary wrestling year.
His WrestleMania 36 match against Randy Orton last month was a disappointment, but it still was a big deal, having the Rated-R Superstar return to singles competition and compete at Mania for the first time in nine years.
And then Edge disappeared. We haven’t seen or heard from him since Mania last month. Until Monday.
During a bumper for next week’s Raw, we got the advertisement that Edge and Randy Orton will have a rematch next Monday night. Just like that, with no build-up, no follow-up on their Last Man Standing match, Edge and Orton will show up next week and wrestle.
Maybe this is asking too much, but wouldn’t it have worked much better to advertise Edge’s return and actually set up the match, explain why we need a rematch to a bout with a stipulation that’s usually reserved for the end of a feud?
This just feels lazy and without any planning, at a time when the writers literally have nothing but time on their hands to script and plan everything down to the last detail.
