5 WCW Legends Who Never Appeared On Monday Nitro

2. Ron Simmons

Ron Simmons may well be a WWE Hall of Famer, but it was in WCW that the former Cleveland Browns defensive tackle made history. Simmons began working for Jim Crockett in 1987, learning the ropes and getting experience alongside the veterans of the game.

Simmons worked in the tag team ranks for a number of years, most notably teaming with Butch Reed as Doom. Simmons and Reed are recognised as the first ever WCW World Tag Team Championships, and it was Simmons who got the big push when the inevitable break-up came.

After feuding with Cactus Jack, Simmons won a raffle in order to get a WCW World Heavyweight Championship shot against Big Van Vader in 1992. That sounds ridiculous, right? Simmons' luck didn't end with the raffle, and on 2 August 1992 he became the first African American to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

Simmons left WCW in September 1994, 51 weeks before the first episode of WCW Monday Nitro. It wasn't until July 1996 that he turned up in the WWF, wearing a ridiculous black and blue gladiator outfit and stupid helmet.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
