By 1990, Hulk Hogan was the undisputed face of the WWF and professional wrestling. He was the biggest star in the industry and had been world champion for five of the previous six years.

At the same time, the Ultimate Warrior was experiencing a meteoric rise to the top. During the past two years, he held the Intercontinental Championship the majority of the time (when it was viewed as a stepping stone to the world title) and was receiving huge crowd reactions.

The seeds for this title-versus-title match were sown at the 1990 Royal Rumble when Hogan and Warrior cleared the ring and then turned to face off against each other. The crowd lost its collective mind as the two squared off in a stalemate. A dream match was in the making, and WrestleMania 6 became a huge success on the back of this one bout.

On top of being a huge match between two top stars, Hogan and Warrior put on a really good in-ring contest, with Hogan losing clean to Warrior in the center of the ring.
