Pros:

1. The most popular ‘Alliance’ wrestler

2. Unique look and wrestling style

3. Managed to bring in some of the old ECW faithful to watch WWE

Cons:

1. One of the most underrated wrestlers on the roster

2. Nearly killed Triple H with a Frog Splash to the throat

3. Screwed himself over royally by getting arrested

If popularity was the sole measure of one’s theoretical success in WWE, RVD should’ve been World Champion many times over. He was the only Alliance Superstar to get consistent cheers, and throughout the early-to-mid 2000s, he was beloved by the WWE Universe.

It wasn’t hard to see why: he stood out like a sore thumb (in a good way). He had a different kind of athleticism than most other WWE Superstars, and possessed an air of likability that made him a consistent attraction.

Of course, many people, including Vince himself, were aware of these things, and would’ve given RVD what he was due…if he didn’t make so many mistakes. Even though both he and Triple H know that his botched Frog Splash onto Hunter’s throat was just a mistake, Vince clearly saw otherwise, and killed RVD’s main event push before it gained anymore momentum.

But RVD’s biggest mistake was getting arrested for marijuana possession…while carrying the WWE Championship. The negative press was enough to get RVD not only suspended, but for the company to strip him of the belt and send him falling back down the card, never to reach the same heights again.

Final Rating: ****1/4
