6 Devastating WWE Defeats John Cena Suffered At SummerSlam

4. Randy Orton Retains The WWE Title Against Cena At SummerSlam 2009

It's another Cena/Orton match two years after their other SummerSlam match. This time around, Orton walked into the match as the heel WWE Champion that was leading the Legacy group while Cena was hoping to get a fair match out of him. That didn't happen. They went overboard with the booking in this one. Instead of keeping it simple, they really tried to complicate things. Orton shoved the ref to get disqualified, but it got restarted. Orton walked out for a countout, but it got restarted again. Then Orton cheated by putting his foot on the ropes for a pinning attempt that the ref didn't catch. Another ref came down to the ring to restart the match. For the finish, Cena had Orton in the STF when a "fan" jumped on ref Scott Armstrong. It was really Brett Dibiase (brother of Ted Jr.), but we didn't know it when he did it. Orton ended up using that distraction, which was a storyline plan of his, to hit the RKO for the win. The match was a disappointment. They overbooked it too much. That was done because they did some rematches and Cena eventually got his revenge. This is a match you'll want to skip if you feel like looking back at SummerSlam matches.
