6 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (March 27 - Results & Review)
4. Very Good Match, Iffy Finish
The Young Bucks defeated Private Party to advance to the semi-finals of the World Tag Team title tournament in a match that was very good, promised to break through to the great tier, but was slightly let down by a rushed closing stretch and botched finish. This was more dynamic than an EVP Young Bucks TV match early.
After a dazzling Private Party shine, though, Nicholas Jackson hopped onto the barricade with Marq Quen and drilled him to the floor below with a demented Falcon Arrow. That was as awesome spot, after which the Bucks took methodical control, working over Quen's back throughout. It's still a bit jarring, watching the Bucks approach things with such a slower sense of pacing, but they're savvy enough to make it matter. For the first time in years - perhaps since that first Dynamite match - Isiah Kassidy looked like a potential world-beater. For all the years of accusations of getting "their s*** in", the Bucks are actually incredible at mapping out and getting into position for a house afire hot tag. This comeback sequence culminated with the expected beat-for-beat false finish of the 2019 match, but, as expected as it was, Matthew Jackson can kick out at 2.99 with the best of them. They extracted every bit of drama from the moment.
It wasn't just an easy retread of the original shocker; to further convey the idea that Private Party were the Bucks' bogey team, Nicholas Jackson hit Quen with a German suplex on the apron. He never does that, but he needed to do something more on the night to guarantee victory.
The match didn't fall apart after that, exactly, and Private Party hitting More Bang For Your Buck was a really neat spot, but even before the finish, the Quen belt shot near-fall fell flat. This was rushed. No tension was generated at all. The fans may have been expecting a Kazuchika Okada run-in. The Bucks were surely lying about him in their pre-match promo, no?
At the finish, Nicholas slipped and missed his part of the stereo EVP Trigger finish. It looked embarrassing, obviously. Do the Bucks need to go back to wearing tights?
It feels like this new attire, which in fairness does look super-douchey, is a better idea on paper. In the ring, it's cumbersome.
