6 Ups & 2 Downs From WWE NXT UK (27 May)

3. Respect Is Gone

Kay Lee Ray will again defend the NXT UK Women’s Championship against Meiko Satomura in two weeks’ time (10 June), but this match will be nothing like their first encounter. That first outing was about respect more than anything else. This one, however, is about a) Kay Lee proving herself as ‘The Forever Champion’, and b) Meiko proving why she’s one of the world’s best.

They proved as much in a vignette for the championship contest.

The champion stated that she had spent her entire career respecting her peers and helping them reach where they wanted to be, which got her nowhere. Now, she’s out for herself; there’s a reason she’s WWE’s longest-reigning female champion just now, you see. Satomura, meanwhile, said how she was hoping to have a friendly bout, until she took a KLR superkick.

Vignettes like this ahead of marquee bouts, particularly those with a bit of history coming into them, are always far superior than those that go without vignettes. Production goes a long way in making a story stand out. If this didn’t make you want to watch their second match, nothing will.
