6 Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Jun 12)
3. Good Match, Dull Ending
There's no balance in the SmackDown women's division. At all.
This was particularly apparent in the night's main event, which pit cast iron babyfaces Naomi, Charlotte, Becky Lynch, Asuka, and tweener Lana against the villainous Carmella, IIconics, Mandy Rose, and Sonya Deville. It should take only a cursory glance to figure out which side is stronger than the other.
The heels aren't without their merits, but it's hard to take a quintet of relative rookies seriously against two Horsewomen and a dominant force of nature with just a single loss on her record. Nonetheless, they worked a fun match. Most participants got a chance to shine despite the curtailed 12-minute runtime, with Charlotte's Moonsault to the outside the most spectacular spot. Royce and Kay took the impact, before Carmella almost pinned Asuka with a deep two on a Superkick, with Lana making the save. This allowed 'The Empress' to seize he foe in the Asuka Lock, and that was that.
SmackDown closed with a stalemate as the victorious babyfaces gathered in the ring, looking up at the briefcase. Not exactly the most exciting scene to head to the pay-per-view on, but the action preceding it was enjoyable, and it was great to see the division's full breadth in the spotlight.
