5. Sami Gets What He Wants
For the past several weeks, Sami Zayn has made his case to Gunther for a World Heavyweight Championship match, to no avail.
Zayn made a final appeal on Monday night, bluntly pointing out what was obvious to everyone: Gunther was embarrassed by Sami at WrestleMania 40, and he’s afraid it could happen again. Surprisingly, the Ring General acknowledged that assessment, saying he was afraid of his reputation, which took a big hit when he lost at 'Mania, with his father being disappointed that he lost to a bum.
Seeing an opening, Sami capitalized by calling Gunther a coward, which unleashed the world champion and triggered a short brawl that ended with a Gunther powerbomb… and finally an acceptance for a World Heavyweight Championship match. It took a beating, but Zayn got what he wanted by goading the Ring General and putting him in a tough spot: continue to deny Sami and prove him right, or give him the title match and risk another embarrassment.
Even though Zayn only wrestled one match (against Ludwig Kaiser), he earned this title match by making the case and leaning on his unique standing as the only man to beat Gunther on the main roster. Good stuff.
