6 Ups & 3 Downs From WWE SmackDown (9 Jan - Results & Review)
Downs...
3. Right Result, But…
Not everybody's gonna agree wholeheartedly with this, and that's fine, but...yours truly didn’t really get into Trick Williams vs. Rey Fenix. It was the right idea to have Trick win his debut match on the main roster, and yet he didn’t really click with Fenix. Something has gone south for Rey in WWE too, so maybe his confidence is low. The sad reality is that he was out here to put on a show and make Williams look special, but that didn’t end up happening.
There weren't enough aerials from Fenix (which is his speciality), and everything was a bit too turgid in what should’ve been a real exhibition for both. Honestly, this guy thought going in that the match had some Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle from SummerSlam 2002 potential, but it definitely wasn’t that sort of quality. It wasn't even close.
Is all of this too harsh? It might be considering the most important thing here is that Williams continues bedding in on the main roster and has that first win under his belt. It just feels like the match could've been a bit more lively than it was. At times, Trick was moving through treacle out there, which was unexpected.
Look, nobody's going to point to this as some 'where it all went wrong' moment for the former NXT Champ. He's a star in the making, and he'll have better matches than this going forwards, but it didn't just land for this writer personally. Admittedly, that may have something to do with unrealistic expectations.
Onto the next.
