6 Ups & 6 Downs From Kane's WWE Career
4. Embrace The Hate
Team Hell No came along at just the right time for Kane, who'd once again had his credibility and intrigue tanked by a long series of creative missteps in 2012, starting with his rivalry with John Cena.
The duo literally feuded over a t-shirt slogan. As 'Big Match John' strode out with "Rise Above Hate" emblazoned across his chest every night, Kane urged him to "embrace the hate" instead, and there was little more to it than that. It was as thin a storyline premise as you'll find, with WWE presumably thinking that the performers' name value alone would be enough to coast theme through such obviously mailed-in material.
'The Big Red Machine' spent weeks trying to convince his opposite number to lean into his souring reactions and turn on the audience ahead of his WrestleMania match with The Rock, but Cena refused. It was beyond boring. Among other things, Kane continually lashed out at John's ally, Zack Ryder (who was soundly buried in the process), to provoke the darkness within Cena, but it all led to a dull, predictable loss at Elimination Chamber.
