2. Berating An Empty Chair

As great as the Miz/LA Knight feud has been during the past month, it can very easily and very quickly jump the shark and overstay its welcome, and that’s exactly what might have happened Monday night.

To get to the bottom of the nonexistent controversy surrounding their match at Payback, Miz welcomed his guest to Miz TV, John Cena. Only, you couldn’t see John Cena (get it?). Cue eyerolls and groans.

Miz took the one-note joke and played it out for 10 minutes, alternating between arguing with an empty chair, revealing the subterfuge to the fans, and then fighting Imaginary Cena, a battle he surprisingly won.

All of this led to Miz throwing down a challenge for another match with Knight, meaning that this feud must continue. And the fans went mild. After all, Miz in 2023 has one truly great function: getting beat up by bigger stars as a human punching bag.

Carrying on this feud runs the risk of things stagnating, especially if WWE goes its usual route of a trilogy, meaning Knight would be stuck for three months while his popularity is at an all-time high feuding with a one-note, mid-card Greek.

Hopefully, this rematch will be quick and decisive and LA will move on, but there’s always that palpable fear that WWE will WWE this.
