Regardless of how he won it, Kevin Owens is the new WWE Universal Champion. That means your last three “world” champs have been Dean Ambrose, Finn Balor and Owens – not exactly the kind of guys you’d picture winning world titles in WWE five years ago.

Owens came into WWE in 2015 on a tear, defeating John Cena clean in his first official match. He cooled off considerably from then, but he’s been bubbling beneath the surface in recent months, standing out with his promos and matches and being kept near the top of the card. It was starting to feel like a matter of time before he reached the top.

That time ended Monday night, when KO won his first WWE Universal Championship, arguably becoming the top guy in the company, or at least, a major focal point. And sure, Owens was basically handed the title Monday, but everyone has seen him win big matches, so it’s not like he’s never won anything on his own in WWE.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Kevin Owens Show unfolds.
