6 Ups And 6 Downs From WWE WrestleMania 36 (Part 2)
1. Last Man Standing Just Kept Going
Leading up to Sunday, the match this writer was most looking forward to was the Edge/Randy Orton Last Man Standing match. It wasn’t just because it was Edge’s first singles match in nine years. Quite simply, it had one of the most compelling stories behind it too.
And then the bell rang.
More than a half-hour later, some fans had to be yelling at the TV, “Just end it already!” The match dragged on and on and on, with Edge and Randy roaming the entire backstage area – the gym, a conference room and the storage area. They wandered around, punching each other and bouncing their heads off various surfaces. Edge dropped an elbow off a storage cage through Orton, who was lying on a table, but the match then kept going for another 10+ minutes.
The ending came on top of a production truck, with Edge countering a punt with a spear, Orton countering a spear with an RKO, and finally Edge hitting a conchairto to get the 10 count.
What makes this unreal is that this match was taped days and days ago. It should have been scripted out much better, booking better, more innovative spots. They had the ability to shoot these spots from numerous angles, do multiple takes and set stuff up creatively. They did none of that.
They were going for “epic,” but all we got was “long.” It’s really a shame, because Edge’s big return after a well-done storyline deserved to be so much better.
