6 Wrestling Screwjobs Other Than THAT One
Bret and Shawn, take the night off. Plenty of others have gotten screwjobbed over the years.
Oh no, not this again. Are we really gonna talk about Montreal?
Millions of words have been written about THAT 'screwjob' (ahem, including by us), not to mention the countless retreads, homages, and ill-conceived callbacks to that fateful night.
But no, we're not going to talk about... that one. That's far from the only screwjob in pro wrestling history.
As it turns out, screwjobs are as big a part of the fabric of wrestling as suplexes, egos, and exaggeration.
Some titles might have been devalued since their heyday, but they are still far more than mere storytelling props. Titles represent months of story development, years of hard work and dedication and loyalty, and decades of wrestling tradition. Clearly they mean something to the business in general and the promotion in particular if you're willing to legitimately double-cross someone in order to protect your championship during a predetermined bout.
The events in today's list explore the extreme lengths to which promoters and wrestlers will go to ensure that titles only adorn the waists of those they've chosen.
Of course, when you've got big egos and multiple promoters involved, they say anything can happen.
Especially in one of history's greatest screwjobs.
6. Taya Valkyrie Vs. AAA
This is both the most recent wrestling screwjob and the one that inspired this list.
Mexican promotion AAA continues a streak of bad PR regarding talent relationships, after chasing off Fenix and Pentagon Jr. in battles over their trademarks. (Hence why they're now known as Rey Fenix and Penta El 0M on the indies.)
The Reina de Reinas champion Taya Valkyrie (aka Taya on Lucha Underground) won the title months ago in a street fight. But she was stripped of the belt two weeks ago, ostensibly for using a choke (in a DQ match)! The belt was then handed over to the returning Sexy Star.
So how did AAA get their hands on the belt? Well, they conned her fiance -- and current triple champion Johnny Mundo, holder of the AAA Mega, AAA Latin American, and AAA Cruiserweight championships -- into delivering the title to them, believing that they needed it for a photo shoot.
Not only did this lead to Taya quitting the company, but it also put their upcoming Triplemania event in jeopardy, as they've p**sed off the guy holding three of their titles.
Can't wait to see how this one plays out.
