The relative pros and cons of Lana, with a single television match under her belt, competing for the SmackDown Women's championship have been discussed ad nauseum. That ground's as well -trodden as the numerous muddy festival fields this summer, so we'll leave off. Instead, let's consider the very real possibility of a Lana upset, and how that could be a 'Good Thing'.

Obviously, the logic behind this match is loopy: the Russian demanded to be in the MITB ladder match, so Shane McMahon gave her a shot at the title, where she could prove she is good enough to enter a match in which she could win a shot at the title. Still following?

But Lana winning wouldn't be so utterly dreadful. Clearly, she'd have to claim the belt through trickery (though I'd love it if she waltzed out there and had a 6 and a quarter star classic), after which she'd enter a Honky Tonk like run, weaseling out defeat at every opportunity - assuming her current babyface reactions abate.

The strap would come with a huge caveat: though she might be able to squirm from defeat, the Sword of Damocles that is the MITB holder would be a permanent threat. Perhaps Lana could employ husband Rusev as a permanent bodyguard? Maybe even a whole team of protection? Hey, if it works for the WWE champ, why not the women's?

It's a good angle, so probably won't happen. But that doesn't mean a shock win isn't still on the cards. WWE love their 'surprise' switches, and the dilettante debutante is set for one tonight.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
